State Champion Spotlight: Ami Beaumier (Bonny Eagle)
What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?
I knew I was going to have a long day at States so I made sure to continue focusing on my training, talk with my coach a lot about my race plans, and really try to mentally get myself prepared for all my events.
What was one thing that you focused on this winter that made a difference in your performance?
One thing I really focused on this winter was using long runs as another type of workout. Before, I'd always ran long runs as super recovery and didn't really take them seriously. My coach really emphasized the importance of well-paced long runs at the beginning of this season, and so when I started running them at a faster pace, it really helped my endurance and mental strength.
You tripled at the state meet how did you manage your energy levels throughout the day for each race?
Warming up and cooling down plays a huge part during the big meets with multiple events so I really focused on getting quality warmups and cool downs in. I also tried to stay off my feet in-between events to save my legs, and made sure to hydrate and eat a lot of "recovery" foods.
You won the 2 mile state title running a then personal best on your third race of the day, how were you able to accomplish that feat?
My coach and I had talked about my race plans which was to conserve as much energy as I could in my 4x800 leg, tempo a top 5 spot in the mile, and go all out in the two mile. Taking it kind of easy in those first two events really helped give me the energy I needed for the 2 mile. Also running with such strong competitors, like Slager, Leckbee, Pasch, and Sholl, in the 2 mile really pushed me to leave everything out on the track.
Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?
Coming into the season my goal was to either win the 2 mile or get a time I was happy with at States, and to PR in all of my events, which unfortunately didn't really happen in the 800.
What have your coaches meant to your success?
This year Bonny Eagle had a mix of newer coaches who made the season so much fun and very successful, however, Coach Burleson is the coach that motivates me and pushes me to the max. It's rare to find a coach that motivates you to run your best race more than the competitors you're racing with. He knows how to train specific athletes, and is always giving us advice and tips. The workouts he created and the amount of confidence and enthusiasm he had in me and my upcoming state races really helped strengthen me physically and mentally. Our team is extremely grateful for his coaching and I'm really excited for the upcoming seasons.
