State Champion Spotlight: Darcy Cochran (Cape Elizabeth)

State Champion Spotlight: Darcy Cochran (Cape Elizabeth)

What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

Every practice and meet helped prepare me for the state meet. I made sure I was working hard and staying safe from injuries. The week before the state meet I worked on hurdle form and block starts. With the relay we worked on our hand offs, which helped a lot in fact we were able to drop 2 seconds in NE's. At states I stretched and made sure to use my inhaler. I also stayed off my feet.

What was one thing that you focused on this winter that made a difference in your performance?

This winter I really worked to improve my hurdle form. I worked on having my arm in the right place as well as getting my back foot over fast. I also worked on my speed in the 200 which helped a lot because by the end of the season I dropped about 1 second. I always ate well and made sure I was well rested before a competition.

You repeated as 55m hurdles champion clocking a personal best 8.51, you have dominated the hurdles since last year what has it meant to you to win three state titles already in your career?

Winning three titles and only being a sophomore feels like great accomplishment for me, and I look to only add more.

Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?

One of my main goals this season was to repeat as the state winner. I did accomplish this and I couldn't be happier with myself. At the begging of the season I wanted to go under a 8.6 and In the first meet alone I got a 8.58. Then I wanted to go under 8,5 I was so close to doing that! With the 200 I wanted to sub 27 and I ran a 26.68 so I was very happy with that!

If there was one event you haven't done that you would like to try what would it be?

I would want to compete in the triple jump. In middle school I did long jump and would want to try something along the lines of that.

What have your coaches meant to your success?

My coaches have helped me so much. With the constant support and help I receive from them. My hurdle coach helped me so much with the speed and hurdle form! And my coach Worthley helped me a lot with block starts was at every meet supporting me. I'm so thankful for the coaches I have.
