Class A Girls Eastern Maine

Last year the top two teams were seperated by just 4 points with the Mt. Ararat Eagles earning the victory over the Mt. Blue Cougars.  The Eagles are back looking to make it two in a row, and based on returners they are the early favorite out of the gate. Mt. Ararat (pictured left-photo by flewphoto) returns 5 of their top 6 runners, including there top 4 runners from a championship team a year ago.  The powerful 1-2 punch of senior Kate Spies (2nd in 2009) & junior Emma Wood (4th in

2009) give the Eagles the front runners, combine that talent with junior Emilia McGrath (12th in 2009), sophomore LaurenMcNett (16th in 2009), & senior 800m indoor champion Chloe Emerson (21st in 2009) gives Mt. Ararat a deep, talented, & well rounded squad. It will be tough for the rest of Eastern Maine to mount a challenge if the Eagles stay healthy.

What teams maybe up for the challenge? Last years runner-up Mt. Blue is back with another strong team despite #3 returner Shelby Aseltine transferring to Gould Academy. Up front for the Cougars will be junior Addie Cullenberg (6th in 2009 pictured right)) & senior Gwen Beachem (9th in 2009) these two give the Cougars a strong 1-2. The supporting cast of junior Louisa Stancioff (24th in 2009), senior Emily Reed (43rd in 2009), sophomore Amy Hilton (56th in 2009) & senior Eliza Richard. The Mt. Blue coaches expect Hilton to be much better in 2010 as she was hampered by illness most of last fall.

The Dragons of Brunswick will look to return to the top spot this fall as well. Last Fall Brunswick placed 4th earning a trip to the state meet. The Dragons will be led by one of the top individuals junior Katie McMahon (3rd in 2009 pictured left)), McMahon is a threat to win it all, as she continues to improve. McMahon is coming off a strong spring track season. Senior Megan McDonough (14th in 2009) will need to stay healthy for Brunswick to challenge. The Dragons will also need improvement from the #3-#5 runners which should be junior Madsy Schneider (22nd in 2009),  junior Jasmine Boyle (33rd in 2009) & senor Farren Welzel (40th in 2009).

Other Teams

Brewer: The Witches placed 5th in 2009 making it to the state meet as a team. They have a strong 1-2 with junior Sara Chavarie (8th in 2009) and senior Michelle Haluska who missed the regional meet last year due to injury.

Messalonskee: The Eagles placed 6th in 2009 with a very young team, they return their entire top 7 and will be looking for another spot in the state meet this year.  Leading the way will be senior Meghan Collier (5th in 2009).

Edward Little: The Red Eddies were 3rd a year ago earning a spot in the state meet. They only have 5 returning runners so they will need a boost from newcomers or freshman. Top returners senior Abby Hart (10th in 2009) & junior Audrey Bennett (11th in 2009) give EL  a strong 1-2.

Bangor: The Rams placed 7th in 2009. They'll sport a young team in 2010 led by junior Mariah Reading (28th in 2009)

Morse: The Shipbuilders finished 10th last season, they are a very young team hoping to improve on the 2009 campaign. Leading the way will be sophomore Charlotte Recknagel (27th in 2009)

Lewiston: The Blue Devils were 11th a year ago. Junior Nicole Court-Menedez (39th in 2009) is the fastest returner.

Lawrence: The Bulldogs were 12th last year, so they have no where to go but up in 2010. #1 returner Sarah Fuller (50th in 2009) will lead the squad this year.

Cony: The Rams were 8th in 2009, they have 4 underclassmen in their top five returners. Leading the way is sophomore Erin Bolduc (19th in 2009)

Individuals

With 11 of the top 12 runners back from the 2009 Eastern Maine Regional the individual title should be highly competitve with a handful of girls with a real shot of capturing the title. Who will come out the victor? You'll have to wait and see, but first let's look at the top contenders based on 2009 results.

Mt. Ararat's Kate Spies (pictured right-photo by Joe Hyatt) has been the individual runner-up the past two years, Spies will be looking to change things during her senior season. Kate had a strong run last fall breaking the 20 minute barrier in the process. Outdoors Spies finished 10th in the 3200m at the state meet, clocking 12:12.74.

Brunswick junior Katie McMahon figures to be Spies main competition this fall. McMahon finished right behind Spies last year in the regional meet in 3rd, and really stepped up

her game at the state meet where she finished 4th over 30 seconds in front of Spies. Katie had a strong outdoor track season as well as she continued to improve, at the state meet McMahon clocked 5:23.85 for 1600m, which was just off her best, and came back with a 3rd place finish in the 3200m, running 11:39.25. Katie ended the season on a high note with a personal best at the New England meet in the 3200m, 11:28.63

Other athletes that figure to be in the mix are Emma Wood (Mt. Ararat) who was the 4th place finisher in 2009. Wood had a solid outdoor track season running personal best in the 1600m, 5:32.6 & 12:08.45 for 3200m. Messalonskee senior Meaghan Collier is another harrier to keep an eye on in 2010. Collier was 5th last fall, and followed that up with a strong outdoor track season, that saw Collier run personal best of 5:33.25 for 1600m & 12:09.74 for 3200m. Mt Blue junior Addie Cullenberg will be looking to be the next great Cougar harrier to win an Eastern Maine title. Last fall Addie finished 6th, and had personal bests from 800m-3200m this spring.
