Class A Boys
#1 ranked Scarborough is the favorite to win the regional title in 2010. The Red Storm have been on roll since the Festival of Champions, with excellent quality up front with three runners under 17, and all 5 scorers breaking the 18 minute barrier. Interestingly enough Red Storm haven't won a Regional title since 2006. This could be the year they get back the top spot. They will be pushed by #7 ranked Gorham. The Rams scored a win over Scarborough earlier this year at the Southwest Classic, so they have the runners to get it done. Gorham will need a big meet from their top 3 if they are going to repeat the feat. Also look #9 Massabesic to be right in the mix for a top 3 finish. The team race for states should be a good one. Currently there looks like there will be 15 total teams, so 8 teams will make it to the state meet.

Individual Race
This should be an excellent race with no clear cut favorite heading in. The return of Jack Terwilliger (Cheverus) last week makes the race even more intriguing, Terwilliger was the pre-season favorite, but has been hampered by an IT band injury that has severely limited his training this fall. Nevertheless, he returned last week at Cheverus; winning in 17:05. Nick Morris (Scarborough pictured left) has been the top runner in Class A Western this fall, Morris has won 4 times during the regular season. Morris was the top Western Class A runner at the Southwest Classic, as well as Festival of Champions. Morris finished 4th in this meet last year. Logan Marshall (Gorham) is another top contender for the Western Maine title. Marshall has clocked 16:28 for 5k on the season, good for 2nd fastest in Western Maine Class A this fall. Logan was 5th at the SW Classic, & 13th at the FOC.

Class B Boys
#2 ranked Falmouth is undefeated on the season against Class B competition. They'll look to add the Western Maine title this weekend, to keep the undefeated season going. The Yachtsmen are a very deep team, led by front runner Tim Follo. Falmouth will go against 3 other ranked teams, #4 Greely, #5 Cape Elizabeth, & #6 York. Greely was the runner-up to Falmouth in the WMC Championship to weeks ago, they edged York by 1 point, while Cape Elizabeth was 4th. Cape will benefit from the return of #1 Thomas Bottomley, who was sick at WMC's, and didn't run. All threes teams will have to match Falmouth's quality and depth, which has been a major for their success in 2010. Greely should benefit from running at Twin Brook. 13 teams are entered to run, assuming 5 runners from eahc team start the race, 7 teams will advance to the state meet.

Individual Race
The Western Maine Class B individual title looks to be Frybeurg Academy's Silas Eastman to lose. Eastman is undefeated in 2010, and most recently own the WMC title. Eastman was the runner-up last fall as a freshman isn't afraid to lead the race from the beginning, and will set a blistering pace even on the tough Twin Brook course. If anyone is to challenge him they will have to be on top of their game. Tim Follo (Falmouth) is the runner in Class B that has been closest to Eastman all fall, finishing less than 10 seconds back at the WMC meet two weeks. Follo has been very consistent this fall, an appears to be getting better with each meet.

Class C Boys
The Class C Western Maine team title looks to be wide open. NYA looks to be the top team based on the 5k times so far this season. NYA has a strong 1-2 punch (Cam Regan & Evan Kendall) that could propel them to the title. They finished 12th at the FOC, the top Class C team and took the Div 2 WMC title over Waynflere by 11 points. Teams that should challenge are Waynflete, who will be aided by Abshir Horor low number at the front. MVC Champion and defending Class C State Champion Boothbay will be in the mix as well, they are peaking at the right time. Another team to watch out for is MVC runner-up Monmouth who was just 4 points back of Boothbay last weekend, and don't count out the defending Western Maine Regional champions Freeport out, they'll need some runners to return from injury to have a shot. With 13 teams with 5 runners on the roster, 7 teams would move on to the State Meet next weekend.

Individual Race
This will be one of the races everyone wants to see on Saturday, as three of the top runners in the state will square off against eachother. Coming off a win at the MVC meet Chase Brown (Boothbay) may have the edge mentally, as he was able to defeat Madison's Matt McClintock for the first time in a big meet last weekend clocking 16:22 for 5k on a tough course, as he was 10 seconds ahead of the previously unbeaten McClintock. Don't count out McClintock, he runs with a lot of heart and no doubt is looking forward to getting back out of the course to give it another go. Matt won the FOC meet earlier this fall, leading from start to finish, so he won't be afraid to do it again. Add in Waynflete's Abshir Horor, who has had a strong first XC season. Horor ran well at the Southwest Classic meet at Twin Brook earlier in the season placing 2nd (17:17) on a hot day, he added a 7th at FOC, then was less than 7 seconds behind Silas Eastman at the WMC's where he placed 2nd. This is anyone's race between these three, can't wait to watch it unfold.

Class A Girls
#1 ranked Cheverus comes into the meet as the heavy favorite, the Stags have been impressive in 2010, running undefeated on the season. They have dominated the two biggest races of the season, the Southwest Classic and FOC. At FOC they won by over 100 points, they have the fire power up fron with Emily Durgin, Fiona Hnedry, & Shannon Conley, and some quality depth behind them. How good can this team be, that remains to be seen, but it might just be equal to last year's squad that won Regionals, States, and placed 6th in New England. Also expected to be in the mix is #5 Massabesic, the Mustangs have a taleted and deep squad, who should benefit from the return of Joeclyn Acheson, who was the #1 runner for them earlier in the year, she has been out with an injury. With her back in the mix, they should be able to cose the gap between them and the Stags, how much? we'll have t wait and see. Other ranked teams competing are #6 Bonny Eagle, the Scots got by #8 ranked Windham by one point last week.. They have a strong 1-2-3, they'll need a a big day from #4-#5 to hold off a deep Windham squad. The Eagles have had a breakout season, and they'll look to continue the regular season into the postseason. #12 Gorham will also compete, they are led by standout MIa Rapolla. 16 teams have 5 of more runners on their rosters, so if they all make it to the starting lines, 8 teams will be moving on to the State Meet.

Individual Race
Round 3... All eyes will be on this race as Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) will face off against defending Western Maine Regional champion Emily Durgin (Cheverus). Leonardi is undefeated in 2010, she's won the Southwest Classic & FOC meets, both times beating Durgin. Abbey is currently ranked #12 in the Milesplit National Individual XC ranking. Durgin's fitness looks to be coming around just nicely last time out she was sub 18 for 3 miles, after getting a slow start to training this summer after recovering from a stress fracture suffered during outdoor track that caused her to miss the state meet. This is the meet last year that saw Durgin hand Leonardi her first loss against a Maine runner, will it happen again?

Class B Girls
#2 ranked Cape Elizabeth is in familiar territory, they are the favorites to win a 8th straight Regional title. The Capers are undefeated against Maine competition this fall. Last time out they dominated at the Western Maine Conference Championship meet, scoring just 34 points to beat #6 Falmouth by 28 points. #6 Falmouth has had a strong year, they lack a true front runner, but 1-5 pack time is close to 1 minute which will help them in a big meet. They finished 4th at the FOC earlier this fall. Also ranked is #9 York & #11 Yarmouth. York placed 3rd at WMC in Div. 1, they have run well considering they have been missing top runner Michaela Swiatek the entire season due to injury, freshman Heather Evans has had a great year. #11 Yarmouth won the Div. 2 WMC title easily over Waynflete, scoring just 24. The Clippers took down Falmouth earlier in the year & were an impressive 8th at the FOC. With only 11 teams with 5 girls on the roster it looks like only the top 6 will advance to the State Meet.

Individual Race
Top ranked Abby Mace (Maranacook-pictured left) is the two defending Class B Western Maine and State Champion, she'll be looking for a 3rd straight title on Saturday. Her best time of the season cam at Lawrence when she ran 18:54, she had also had a strong showing at the Manchester Invitational finishing 4th, and then a 3rd place finish at FOC, where she ran 18:56. Mace has missed the last two weeks though due to a stress reaction in the bone in her lower calf, she has been cleared to run this weekend, but it's not known how hard she'll be able to go. If Mace is unable to maintain her usual pace, look for freshman Heather Evans (York) to be right in the mix, Evans ran 20:29 earlier in the year at Twin Brook and most recently added a win at the WMC Championship. Fellow classmate Kirsten Sandreuter (Greely) will be right there too, Sandreuter has twice finished right behind Evans this season, most recently at the WMC Championship. Senior Kelsey Barton (Cape) is another threat, she finished 3rd at the WMC's, 1 second behind Sandreuter.

This could be a great race between Waynflete & Merriconeag. Waynflete is the defending Class C State Champions, they finished 2nd behind Yarmouth in the DIV 2 at the WMC Championship. Merriconeag didn't have five finishers at WMC so didn't register a team score. Last week at NYA, Merriconeag had their scoring five running, and took down Waynflete and NYA giving them the momentmum heading into this weekend. Don't count out NYA, they were the surprise team last fall just falling short of a state championship, if they can put it all togther again they'll be in the mix. Pre-meet it looks like 5 teams will advance to State Meet.

Individual Race
Defending Class C State Champion Martha Veroneau (Waynflete) comes into the meet as the favorite. Veroneau placed 18th at the FOC, clokcing her season best time of 20:38, which is 26 seconds faster than the 2nd ranked runner in Western Maine Class C. She added a 6th place finish at the WMC Championship. Look for freshman Sophia Thayer (Boothbay) to be a strong challenger. Thayer is coming off a win at the MVC Championship, and aslo placed 7th in the freshman race at FOC. Merriconeag's Zoe Chace-Donahue is another contender, Chace was 14 seconds behind Veroneau at last week's meet at NYA.
