Bethanie Brown is a senior at Waterville HS. She ran under 5 minutes for the mile last winter becoming the first Maine HS girl to do so. Brown was an All-American in the 2 mile indoors, and capped off the outdoor season with a state all-time best for 1600m. follow Bethanie as she competes during the indoor season.
It seems weird to think that my senior year of Indoor Track is starting to come to an end. The Dartmouth Relays were fun, but now they’re over and we only have one regular season meet left before the championship meets start! Time flies when you’re having fun!
Last night’s meet was a late one, but I enjoyed it. I like to get my sleep, and I knew that I was going to be running the 4x800, the 800 and then the 2-mile all late at night, and I wasn’t sure how that was going to go, but I was happy with my times. The two-mile felt surprisingly good after two 800s.
Racing in the 4x800 was awesome. Lauren(my sister), Brooke Ettinger, Tiana Thomas and I ran 10:23, which was pretty exciting. Lauren and Brooke ran the two-mile later that night with me, and we went 1,2,3. It was my sister’s first time running the two-mile, and she ran 12:47. I’ve been looking forward to seeing her run this race all season. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to watch it, because I was busy running it too! Before the race I was giving her all sorts of tips, and giving her splits that she should hit in the first mile. I was hoping she would break thirteen. It was cool to be running in the same race as her—I think that’s the first time that we’ve been in the same open track race. In the race, I lapped her a couple of times, but as I went by, Lauren and Brooke cheered for me. At first, I was hoping they would run the two-mile with the girls and boys combined, but it was a good idea to not run them together because that would have been a large race—27 people total. Instead, I got to run my race without lots of lap traffic, and just go for it, even though I was a little tired since it was 10:15 at night and my third race of the day.
These Friday night meets are interesting—I’m really glad we don’t have them all the time, but when we do have them, it’s kind of fun. I usually like to get to bed fairly early, so I’m not used to staying up until midnight—even on New Year’s Eve I went to bed at 9:45! But meets like this once in a while are exciting because they confuse my whole system and fill me with this delirious energy that lasts for the meet and the bus ride home. Our bus ride last night was exciting because one of the two buses we took to Bowdoin started smoking and the emergency alarms went off, so both buses got off the Panera Bread/Augusta Civic Center exit and we combined buses. All the people from the smoking bus got onto our bus. Even the other bus driver had to snag a ride home. He got to sit with Coach Wilson, who, if you know him, isn’t really a late night person. Everyone on the bus sat two and sometimes three to a seat, and we all had our large purple duffle bags too. It was a little dramatic, but I was wired from the meet so I didn’t care. However, Saturday morning didn’t feel so good! I need more than 6 hours of sleep! We got to the high school around 12:15 AM—I guess we’d been referring to it pretty accurately as the “Midnight Meet.”
Anyway I’m looking forward to the last regular season meet, and the invitational in Boston that I’m planning on running the weekend before KVACs. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a few more fast times before nationals, and before the season comes to an end!
