Looking Ahead: Class A Boys Top returners 2014

 

The top returner in Class A in 2014 will be Mt Blue's Aaron WIllingham. Willingham who transferred from Texas this fall, had a great start to his 2013 XC season highlighted by his 15:42.18 2nd place effort at the Maine Festival of Champions. Willingham's season ended on a sour note as he developed a shin injury that hampered him in the championship meets, and eventually led him to a DNF at the state championship. Aaron made a name for himself this fall, and will the end of the season not going as he wanted, expect him to have some extra motivation for 2014.

Lewiston's Isaiah Harris better known for his 800m prowess on the track, has quietly emerged as one of the top XC runners in the state. Harris who finished as the state runner-up this fall, will be the top state meet returners, his personal best 16:21.70 from this fall also has him ranked #2 on the returners list. With the state meet back at Belfast next fall, expect Harris to be challenging for the individual win.

Falmouth's Bryce Murdick returns with the 3rd fastest performance from 2013, Murdick ran 16:22.33 at the FOC this fall. Murdick who plaxced 5th in the WM Regional didn't compete in the state meet due to a violation of school rules, will have some extra motivation.

Hampden Academy's Caleb Lord finished 3rd in the state meet this fall, just a blink of the eye behind Isaiah Harris, 17:01.27 to 17:01.93. Lord had a strong posteason run this fall that included a runner-up finish at the conference meet, as well as a 4th place in the EM Regional. Caleb is the #2 state returner and boasts the 4th best 5k time from 2013, 16:24.56

Scarborough sophomore Colin Tardiff is the 5th fastest time returner, and 4th fastest state meet returner in 2014. The diminutive Tardiff was the WM regional runner-up this fall and had a personal best 16:30.52 to his name

Gorham's Jesse Southard ranks #10 on the time returning list but the sophomore will be the #3 state meet returner. Southard had a strong run for 6th place in the state meet this fall.

 

Looking at the top returning teams 2013 state runner-up Scarborough tops the list. The young Red Storm team losing only one senior from their state meet squad. It's been 2 years since Scarborough has raised the trophy as the best team in Class A, remarkably this is the longest such drought since joining the Class A ranks in 2003.

Falmouth will be a force next fall as well, the Yacthsmen who finished 4th in the Class A state meet this fall despite not running with 3 of their top 7. The Yachtsmen who have had a young squad for 2 years now should benefit from the experience they have gained, they don't lose anyone from the top 7.

A young Windham squad excelled this fall as they went on to finish 6th in the state meet, look for the Eagles to continue their ascention up the team ranks in Class A next fall. Massabesic will be another school to keep an eye on in 2014. The Mustangs who finished 8th in the state meet this fall despite top runner Michael Aboud not running will have their top 3 harriers back.

Mt Blue is the 5th best returning team based of 2013 seasonal best of each athletes, up front no team may have answer for Willingham and Lesko, who should give the Cougars two low sticks. There is some promise with the younger runners like Thad Gunther who come help Mt Blue rise to the top in 2014.
