Salute to Seniors: Zoe Goodwin - Bonny Eagle

Most memorable race/moment:
My junior year cross country there was this one race, I think it was the last race of the regular season, and it was held at Gorham which is known for being a flat and fast course. Every single member of my team got a PR that day, and there were at least 15 of us running in the race! To have everyone perform their absolute best all on the same day was amazing!

Who would you consider your biggest competition over the past four years?
I know this is going to sound cliche, but I would have to say that I am my own biggest competition. I race a lot better when I tell myself I need to beat my own previous best than when I just set a target on another person's back.

What was your greatest accomplishment?
Senior year cross country I was consistently the 6th runner for my team. Then, in regionals I ended up as the 5th runner and helping my team to win the meet. And then in States I ran my way to be the 4th finisher on my team and helped my team to a narrow victory and a State title! Being able to score crucial points for my team and help to win the title was my greatest running accomplishment and one of the proudest moments of my life.

If you could do it all over again, what would you change about your running career in high school?
I would start earlier. I didn't start running until my Junior year. In fact, before then I would have told anyone that "I hate running". But, I succumbed to peer pressure and joined the team because most of my friends were on it and it was one of the best decisions I made ll of high school! So, the lesson is don't be afraid to try something new or outside your comfort zone, you never know what will happen!

What were the most difficult obstacle you had to overcome?
At the end of my junior year I struggled a lot with weight loss. So much so that I could not compete in outdoor track that year. I wasn't used to the amount of exercise I was doing now that I was running and wasn't fueling my body properly for it. I struggled for the whole outdoor season and the following summer. But, I was able to fix the problem by the end of the summer and come back for my senior year of cross country!

What will you miss the most?
I will miss my teammates and my coach the most. Over the past two years I have made some of my closest friends. There is a special bond you form with friends when you have to suffer through the same horrible workouts and excruciatingly long saturday morning runs!

What advice would you give to younger athletes?
Remember to have fun! There were times in my running career when I was too focussed on my times and not focussed enough on having a good time. I would get really mad at myself if I missed my pace in a workout or if I was busy one day and couldn't do any/all of my run I would get paranoid that it would have a horrible effect on my race performance that week. But, the truth is those little things don't matter as much as you might think. The important thing is to go out and have fun!

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?
My coach has had the biggest influence out of anyone I have met throughout high school. He is the only coach I have ever had who truly cares about each individual on the team. I have learned a lot about dedication, and perseverance, and gained a lot of confidence thanks to him. There is no way I would have been able to accomplish all that I did in my short two years of running if it wasn't for him.

What are your college plans?
I plan to go to the University of Rhode Island in the fall to major in marine science and ocean engineering. I will hopefully be running for their cross country team if I can shave off some time from my 5k over the summer!

Who would you like to say thank you too?
First of all my coach for all he does for me and my teammates. Whether it is making individual training plans for each and every one of us, goofing around at the starting line with us to make us less nervous, or bringing us freeze pops and chocolate milk after long and hot cross country practices, we can always count on him to be there for us. And also a big thank you to my Dad for being my biggest fan! he may not be the loudest or most enthusiastic cheerer, but he is still my biggest supporter and there when it counts, Lastly to my teammates for always supporting me ad pushing me to be my best!

Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Good luck to all of the high school runners next year, and to my fellow graduates: kick some butt in college!
