Deering senior Alec Troxell was content to sit in the lead pack for the first two miles. Troxell who is known for his signature kick, would have to use it to repeat as Southern Maine Regional champion. He would cross the line first in 16:51.53 the fastest time of the day between the three class races, and considering the A race never really got started until around the 2.2 mile mark, it was an impressive result.
The decisive move came around the 2.2 mile mark as junior Aiden Willey of Bonny Eagle made a huge move that blew open the race. Willey would lead the race heading out of the pain cave, but Troxell was stalking him and making up ground with just under 400m to go.
The defending champion found another gear as he crossed the finish line with both of his hands in the air, with his index fingers showing he was #1. Tristram Coffin of Scarborough also caught Willey at the top of the home stretch as the junior earned a runner-up finish with his 16:55.11, while Willey was rewarded for his gutsy move with a strong third in 16:57.51.
"It was definitely a battle until I caught him." the senior said post-race.
Troxell will be looking to improve on his sixth place state meet finish from last fall next week, "I've been feeling really good training wise, doing a lot of hard speed workouts, so I'm feeling excited for the championship races.
Falmouth senior John Auer secured a low stick for the two time defending regional champion Yachtsmen with his fourth place finish, he finished in a time of 17:03.53. He was followed by Greely senior Luke Marsanskis who ran 17:04.57 for fifth.
Junior Ethan Eickmann of Kennebunk continued his strong fall as he nabbed sixth place with his 17:04.77, improving on his 14th place finish from last fall. Greely senior Matthew Todd closed with a strong last mile to jump up to seventh place (17:14.64).
Senior Jeffery Waters of Massabesic who set the pace through two miles ended up in eighth place as he clocked 17:14.88. He was followed in ninth place by junior Ben Potter of Falmouth who ran 17:22.39, a year ago he finished without any shoes in 76th place,
Rounding out the top ten individuals was Dawson Desrosiers of Thornton Academy who finished strong in a time of 17:24.31.
In the Class A boys team race the Red Storm of Scarborough packed their top 4 runners in the top 13 lead by a runner-up finish from junior standout Tristram Coffin. The Red Storm used a pack mentally for their 2-4 runners on Saturday and it worked to perfection as freshman Zach Barry finished 11th, followed by senior Harrison Osborne in 12th, while sophomore Erik Losacco was 13th. Scarborough sat out one of their top harriers in junior Connor Coffin who has battled some hip issues this fall, he is ready to jump back into the lineup next week at Belfast and hopefully guide the Storm to the Class A title.
Falmouth, the two defending champions ran well for the runner-up finish behind senior John Auer's fourth place effort.
While top ranked Greely struggled a bit in finishing third, the Rangers were without Sam Wilson in the lineup who is usually their third runner.
Massabesic tallied 131 points for fourth, while Bonny Eagle rounded out the top five teams with 135 points.
