Salute to Seniors: Joey Richards (Winslow HS)

When and how did you get into track and field?

I've been running track since the summer track days in elementary school

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

My biggest competition would probably be Emmett Mooney because I always run against him at states.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

Being able to win states as a team my sophomore year and then my senior year.

How has track and field impacted your life?

Track and field is definitely my favorite sport and it's a way for me to hangout with my friends.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

My freshman year, I was the worst sprinter on our team. I was so slow that I got kicked off the sprinting team and put on the distance team. Mentally, this was hard, but it gave me motivation to work even harder and come back stronger. The following year I came back and ended up scoring the most points on my team during our state championship meet win.

How do you prepare for competitions?

Before my races, I envision how my races go. By doing this it helps me calm the butterflies and prepare me to run

What influence has your coach had on your high school career?

Coach Nadeau, my coach, has had a huge impact on me. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be were I am today. To me, he's more than just a coach. To me, he's a friend that I can always turn to. He's been my coach since the day I started running back in elementary school. The bond that we've made together has been awesome. I'm so thankful that he's been there every part of the way for me.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of track and field?

Outside of track, I like to golf. Golf is tough though because some days you'll play the best you ever have, and then the very next day you'll play terrible.

What are your college plans?

Attending USM to pursue academics and run track.

What are your long-term goals?

Since I'm attending USM next year, some long-term goals I have are to break some school records there.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I'd like to say thank you to my family for supporting me in everything that I do. I'd also like to thank my Coach for showing me everything that I know today.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

Patience. With track, patience is very important because everyone grows and develops at different times. So, stay patient and enjoy the process.
