XC Countdown 2024: Enzo Giampaolo (Lewiston High School)

#11 Enzo Giampaolo (Lewiston High School)

Class of 2026

2023 Results

Festival of Champions 19th place (16:26.91)

Giampaolo's 2023 cross-country season ended prematurely due to a knee injury which prevented him from being able to finish at the Northern Regional and therefore unable to compete in the state meet. Before the injury Enzo ran very well at Festival of Champions and was primed for a great postseason run. On the track he placed fifth in the mile at the Class A state meet and went on to run a personal best of 4:33.55 at the New England Championship. During the outdoor season Giampaolo finished 6th in the 1600m, and 8th in the 3200m at the Class A meet, he clocked personal bests of 4:29.89 and 10:05.25. The 2024 XC season could be a breakout for Enzo, he is one to watch for on the trails this fall.

Getting to Know Enzo

How has your summer training gone? Approximately how many miles have you logged?

It's been alright, had a rough patch where I was out with COVID for 10 days in July, but since then I've gotten back to training. I'm running 35-45 miles per week, as well as 3-4 hours of cross training on the bike.

What are you looking forward to during the 2024 XC season?

I'm really looking forward to some great competition with the top guys in the state as it feels like we're all really close this year and there's no huge favorite who'll be miles ahead. Should make for some close and exciting races hopefully.

What are your goals for the season?

I think for the first part of the season (up until FOC) I'll be looking to just kinda settle in, win a few league meets, and try to beat Lucas Hutchinson who I know I'll be racing at least twice before Festival. Since he's a very string runner and always takes things out hard it should make for some tough races! I'm not sure yet if I'll be racing the Southern Maine Classic but if I do I'd be looking to break 16 there for sure.

As for FOC and past that, I'll start sharpening more with my training and I've looked at some of the times other guys ran their junior year like Maddox and Nathan, so I'd like to see my time at FOC fall around where they were then.

For the postseason I'll definitely be looking to be in contention for and win the Class A state title. That's the main overarching goal I've put for myself this year. Forst however my goals are to win KVACs and Northern Regionals.

Biggest takeaway from the 2023 XC Season?

Three things

1. Summer training can feel like you're not very fit and struggling, but as soon as I race a few times and start sharpening, it comes and your might surprise yourself with your fitness.

2. Be careful with the things you do off the track, since last year that's what prevented me from having a great postseason, since I was horsing around and fell on my knee which really screwed things up.

3. Don't go out too hard in races especially at Belfast where the first mile is downhill and the real hard running comes in the 2nd and 3rd miles.

What's the best piece of advice you've gained from your coaches?

Having patience and trusting the process as well as being a leader on/off the track even when you don't necessarily have a lot of teammates super close in ability.

Favorite XC Course?

Brunswick, pancake flat and starts/finishes on the track, basically a PR cheatcode.

Starbucks, Aroma Joe's or Dunkin?

Never had Aromas, and only tried Dunkin once but Starbucks Frappuccino's definitely used to hit when I was a little kid.

What spikes do you race in?

Last season I wore the Dragonfly's in the green colorway which were basically indestructible and lasted a whole season plus. In the spring I got a new pair of what was supposedly the same show but the blue colorway and is way way less durable for some reason and started to fall apart after 2 outdoor meets. So this year I'll be trying the On Cloudspike 10000m.

Favorite pre-race meal?

What was your favorite moment from the Olympics?

Quincy Hall's comeback win in the 400m.
