Festival of Champions Freshman Race Runner-up (17:10.37)

Merriam had a tremendous freshman season in 2023 that saw him run his best in the Class A state meet where he clocked a personal best of 16:50.13 for 5k finishing 13th overall. He was the second-fastest freshman in the entire state last fall. On the track in the winter, Atticus placed 5th in the Class A 2 mile clocking 10:00.52. During the outdoor season, he ran 4:30.42 for the mile, and at the Class A state meet 3200m he finished third in a personal best 9:46.38. Atticus will look to build on his first-year successes this fall, he has the talent to be the best come November.


Getting to Know Atticus

How has your summer training gone? Approximately how many miles have you logged?

My summer training has consisted of mostly cross-training with a little bit of running. I have started off slow as I feel it is healthy to take a break from running.

What are you looking forward to during the 2024 XC season?

I am looking forward to spending time with my friends on the team. I am also looking forward to the state championship.

What are your goals for the season?

My main goal is to contribute to the team's state's performance, shooting for the state title. I would also like to hit some personal bests while staying injury-free.

Biggest takeaway from the 2023 XC Season?

My biggest take away from the last cross-country season was how much change can take place in just one season.

What's the best piece of advice you've gained from your coaches?

The biggest piece of advice I've taken away from my coaches is that running requires a lot of mental work, and it is not just physical.

Favorite XC Course?

My favorite cross country course is the Festival of Champions course in Belfast which I was able to compete at three times last year.

Starbucks, Aroma Joe's or Dunkin?

Dunkin all the way.

What spikes do you race in?

Saucony Havoc XC3's.

Favorite pre-race meal?

I always like a bagel as my pre-race meal.


What was your favorite moment from the Olympics?

Stephen Nedoroscik having a great performance on the pommel horse.
