2024 Outlook

South Portland has an experienced group back from a 7th-place team finish in the Class A state meet. Top runner Evan Small won't be at full strength early on but when it matters in the postseason should be back to 100% healthy. Fischer Petrlik should be a big boost to the Red Riots as he didn't run in the postseason last fall and was eighth in the recent Bonny Eagle Relays to start the season. Look for South Portland to come on late in the year and be one of the top teams in Class A.

Coach Dave Kahill Comments:

Summer Training - went pretty well. After pretty intense indoor and outdoor track seasons, we emphasized taking a mental and physical break to start the summer. After that, a core group of guys built up a solid running base so we should have very good depth in our top 7, and we should be pretty healthy coming into the season.

Expectations- Well, in terms of SMAA & Class A State Championship terms, there are a lot of solid returning teams ... Scarborough, Camden Hills, Hampden Academy, Brunswick, & Portland to name a few. We'd love to break into the top 4 in Class A and have a shot at making the NE Championship, but it will be a challenge. We've got a lot of upper-class leaders on the team (9 of our top 11 are seniors) so hopefully that will contribute to maturing & peaking at the championship.
