Falmouth & York boys tie for title/Waterville girls cruise to another title

 

Highlights

Waterville showed why they are the top team in Class B with quality and depth. The Purple Panthers got wins in the 100m & triple jump from Alex Jenson, 2 more wins in the 1600m & 3200m from distance ace Bethanie Brown, Olivia Thurston repeated in the 300m hurdles, 2 relay wins in the 4x100 & 4x400. In the 100m hurdles they finished 1-2-3-5 for an amazing 27 points from a single event. Sprinter Georgia Bolduc added two runner-up finishes in the 100m & 200m, Jenson added a runner-up in the long jump. The Panthers amassed 145 points, 60 more than the runner-up Greely.

Greely the state runner-up scored 85 points. The Rangers one just one event with Abby Bonnevie claiming gold in the ploe vault (9-6). They got a strong performance from Kirstin Sandreuter who was runner-up in the 3200m & 3rd in the 1600m. Freshman Emily Saunders provided some important points with a runner-up finish in the triple jump, 3rd in the HJ, & 7th in the long jump. The throwers contributed to the state runner-up with Gwen Sawyer's runner-up in the shot & 3rd in the discus, while Cassidy Storey was 3rd in the SP & 5th in the discus. They also got a pair of 3rd place finishes in the 4x800 & 4x400m relays.

Freshman Kate Hall (Lake Region) returned from a quad injury and was dynamic once again in the state meet winning the 100m, 200m & the long jump, the 3 titles added to the three individual ones she won in indoor bring her freshman year total to 6! Hall also ran on the 2nd place 4x100 team, to score 32 points. In the 100m she set a Class B record of 12.33.

Falmouth's Jenna Serunian came away with a pair of wins in the shot (37-9.5) & discus (109-9). Ellsworth's Aleta Looker won the 800m (2:19.69) & was the runner in the 1600m (5:08.45)

Fryeburg's Corinn Bedell won the 400m in 58.53 to defeat defedning champion & Class B record holder Kaitlin Saulter of Hermon 59.99

Morse's Kerry Cummings just missed the Class B record in the 1600m racewalk by .04 as she won the event in 7:36.36

MDI won the opening 4x800 in 9:44.63, the mark is a new state leader

 

The boys meet came down to the 4x400 with York trailing Falmouth by 2 points, York had to win the 4x400 to have a chance to win, they did just that clocking 3:32.01 but Falmouth finished 2nd in 3:33.74 to ensure themselves a share of the title.

York got strong performances from Josh Brooks who won 400m (50.26) & 5th in the 200m. the 4x800 & 4x400 relays who both finished atop the podium.  Tyler Martin was the runner-up in the HJ (6-0). Tom Reid won the 300m hurdles (41.14) & finished 3rd in the 110's & triple jump plus a 4th in the long jump.  Tom Rasche added a 3rd in the 800m.

Falmouth got a meet record in the 4x100m relay for 10 important points. The other win on the day came from sprinter Jacob Buhelt who crossed the line first in the 200m (23.12). Buhelt also added a 3rd in the 100m. The Yachtsmen got a strong day from Reid Pryzant who was the runner-up in the 110m hurdles (15.44) & 300m hurdles (42.06) plus 5th in the LJ & 7th in TJ. Distance runner Tim Follo was the runner-up in the 1600m (4:32.87) & a 3rd in the 3200m 9:52.34. Aaron Rogers added a big 6 points with a 3rd in the LJ. Matt Kingry also provided a 3rd in javelin (159-4)

The 3200m was a great duel between Silas Eastman (Fryeburg) & Dan Curts (Ellsworth) as both set huge personal best with Eastman just edging out Curts 9:26.36 to 9:26.59.

Nick Danner (Waterville) edged Chris Knaub (Yarmouth) in the javelin 177-7 to 176-03.

Yannick Price-Prevot (Medomak Valley)  took the discus  138-8 & was the runner-up in shot (50-10.25), fellow thrower Nick Margitza (Waterville) took the shot 51-3 .5 and was the runner-up in discus (132-3)

Denzel Tomaszewski (Wells) ran the fastest 100m of all 3 state meets clocking 11.12. Caleb Pease (Camden Hills) didn't win a race but was the runner-up in the 100m, 200m & 400m.

Will Shafer (Gray New Gloucester) dominated the 1600m to win by over 7 second 4:25.74 then came back to run 2:00.71 for a runner-up podium finish
