Inside Scoop: Camden Hills Girls

What a turnaround for the Camden Hills girls xc team last year as they hadn't been to the state meet since at least 2007, as they left with the runner-up trophy in the Class B meet last fall. The Windjammers are looking to improve on a season that saw them win the Eastern Maine Regional by a point over eventual state champion MDI. Camden Hills has everyone back from the top 7 last year and according to coach Flanagan have some talented freshman who will look to become a part of it. Of course it doesn't hurt to have the defending individual champion in Brittany Bowman leading the pack with ALL-NE runner Willow Parker as the #2. It looks to be another close battle with MDI this season, both teams will sqaure off against eachother a couple of times before the state meet (Festival of Champions, & Eastern Maine Regional) this year so we should have a good idea by the time the state meet rolls around just how close it could be for top honors. Look for the Windjammers to continue to be one of the top teams in the state this fall, and if they can get there #4-5 runners closer to the front they will have a great opportunity to hoist the trophy at the end of the year.

Coach Flanagan says....

After only two days of practice, it is a bit difficult to determine how my team will stack up this fall.  What I do know is that I have a core group of very determined and hard working athletes who are eager to see what they can do this season.  We are running more hills already!

On the girls’ side, we have a nice group of rising freshmen this year.  They all have great attitudes and are working hard.  One, Jacqueline Russell, was a stand out during her middle school years, so I am eager to see where she falls within the group.  Two others who come to mind right now are Lydia Morin who is a sophomore and Hannah Brownawell who is a senior.  Both run fluidly and appear quite determined; a perfect combination.  Of course we are excited that Brittany Bowman has had a wonderful summer and that Willow Parker will be coming back as well.  They are both outstanding competitors who add a lot to the team.  Others from last year include Emily Lopez, Lily Kassen, Sam Morse, Ella Scott, and Rosie Lawson.  I’m thinking that there may be one or two other athletes who have break out seasons.

We are looking forward to all of our meets, whether they are regular season or other.  Festival of Champions is wonderful because it will allow us to see where we stack up against most of the best teams in the state.  It would be incredible to perform as well as last year at the KVAC meet and also at regionals.  Then there is the icing on the cake – states.  This team knows it will require a lot of hard work, but I believe that they will give it everything they have.  As a coach, there is nothing more I can ask from them

They are a great group of athletes and it’s a pleasure to work with them
