With the Class C title up for grabs this fall a handful of teams are in the mix to take home the title, one of those teams is the Waynflete Flyers. Waynflete has a strong nucleus returning from a state runner-up team last fall. The Flyers have one of the best 1-2 punches in class with Josh Espy & Abukar Adan.
The Falmouth Yacthsmen girls return a strong squad in 2012 that was the Western Maine Regional runner-up a year ago. Falmouth has several top runners back including top 2011 state meet finisher Madeline Roberts who placed 29th
The Cape Elizabeth boys return 5 of the top 7 from a 5th place team at the state meet last fall. The Capers who were the Western Maine runner-ups are looking to get back to the top spot in 2012. Look for juniors Peter Doane & Liam Simpson to lead the way. Doane finished 8th overall in the Class B meet, and earned a trip to the New England's last fall.
Coming off a 3rd place finish in the 2011 Class B State meet the Lady Vikings of Caribou have 8 of their top 11 back from a year ago, inlcuding top runner McKenzie Belyea who was a 7th overall. One thing is for certain Class B is loaded this fall with MDI & Camden Hills, but Caribou is a team to keep an eye on as well.
The Vikings of Caribou have been one of the best teams in Class B the last 2 years, winning 2 years ago & adding a 3rd last fall. They are back in 2012 with 4 of their top 7 including 2 of the top 3 from last fall.
Could this be the year that the Massabesic Mustang girls finally take home the Class A team title? Massabesic has been the model of consistency the last 5 years, over that span they have been the Western Maine runner-up 5 straight times, as well as the top 4 in the state meet.
2011 was quite a year for the Bangor Ram boys xc team & first year coach Adam Goode as they went from not qualifying for the state the previous 4 year to state runner-up in Class A. The Rams return 4 of their top 7 from a year ago, inlcuding top runner Jonathan Stanhope. While last year was a dream season, don't count Bangor out in 2012 as they gained valuable experience last fall with a young team.
The Greely HS girls cross-country team has another strong team returning this fall, they are coming off a Western Maine Regional title & 5th place in the Class B state meet last fall. Another Western Maine title looks to be well within reach for Greely in 2012. The Rangers return 6 of their top 7, plus add in standout Kirstin Sandreuter who missed the state meet last fall.
The Lewiston Blue Devils boys xc team has big aspirations in the 2012 as they are coming off a strong summer of training according to Coach TJ Niles. Lewiston finished 8th overall in the Class A state meet last fall, they return 5 of their top 7 including individual title threat Mohamed Barre. On paper Lewiston is the 3rd best team in Class A but if a much improved Mohamed Mohamed can translate his road 5k to the xc course they could do much better than that.
What a turnaround for the Camden Hills girls xc team last year as they hadn't been to the state meet since at least 2007, as they left with the runner-up trophy in the Class B meet last fall. The Windjammers are looking to improve on a season that saw them win the Eastern Maine Regional by a point over eventual state champion MDI. Camden Hills has everyone back from the top 7 last year and according to coach Flanagan have some talented freshman who will look to become a part of it.
The two time defending Class A champion Scarborough Red Storm are loaded once again as they aim for their 3rd title in a row. Winning has become tradition for the Red Storm since moving to Class A in 2003 they have won 6 state titles during that time frame. While they graduated 2 time defending Class A individual winner Nick Morris, plus 2 others from the top 7 (Wout Moulin & Mike Tudor), the Red Storm won't be rebuilding they have just reloaded.
Last fall MDI put on a clinic at the state meet on how to run in a pack as the Trojans had a 14 second spread for runners 1-5, which is unheard at any level. With 5 of the tp 16 runners overall it was clear MDI came in on a mission and accomplished it with flying colors. For the rest of Class B this team will be tough to beat as all 7 varisty runners are back as they aim for 2 in a row.
