Conference championships around the state highlighted the weekend in Maine XC. We had several of the top teams in the state battle it out at the KVAC Championships, while some of the top runners rested for the WMC Championships. A course record went down in the PVC and there were dominant team finishes in the MVC. Let's take a look at the highlights.
Close finishes from around the state and the 43rd running of the Manchester Invitational highlighted the weekend that was in Maine XC. Let's take a look at the top moments from the weekend.

Westbrook freshman Quincey Lyden took top honors in the freshman race at FOC as she clocked a new personal best 19:35. Lyden has had an outstanding season so far in 2016.

The Falmouth Yachtsmen are the top returning team in Class A with 161 points based off of 2015 5k bests. But don't count of Bonny Eagle the defending champion Class A champions.

Ben Breton set a new boys course record of 14:56 as he won the Lake Region Invitational, while Emily Carty of Fryeburg took the girls win clocking 18:36
The Greely Rangers are the top ranked squad based of XC returners, and 1600 & 3200m runners from the outdoor season
Scarborough's Colin Tardiff 10:58 took the boys title, while Gabbi Pabst of Westbrook was the girls winner 14:33. Scarborough Boys & Westbrook girls won the team titles.

The Westbrook boys and girls swept the individual and team wins over at Deering Oaks today.

The Massabesic girls also dominated competition, claiming 5 of the top 7 spots and scoring 25 points against a Westbrook team that was riddled with sickness. Michael Aboud continued his impressive senior season with a dominating win on an incredibly challenging Windham course Friday afternoon. Aboud led his fellow senior teammates, Andrew Mongiat and Remington Gaetjens to a 1-2-3 finish on route to a 25-47-52 win over Windham and Westbrook.
XC newcomer Gabbi Pabst of Westbrook picked up her first high school win with a 21:26 finish with teammate Halee Phelps coming in right by her side at 21:27 for 2nd. Scarborough’s freshman standout Bethany Sholl rounded out the top 3 with a time of 21:32.
Yahye Hussein of Deering and Anna Slager of Gorham ran themselves to victory today at Westbrook High as Gorham, Deering, Noble, and Westbrook battled it out on a deceivingly difficult course.

Westbrook was once a powerhouse program in the late 80's and early 90's when the Blue Blazes won 10 states titles from 1983-1996The program hasn't been able to get back to that level in fact the last time they made the state meet was 1998. Westbrook finished 12th in the Western Maine Regional a season, this was a vast improvement over the previous 5 season where they didn't even enough runners to compete as a team at the regional meet.
Today was a record setting day for a pair of runners at the Lake Region Invitational. Matt Malcom and Hannah Austin of NYA both turned in record runs of 15:00 and 17:59 on the 2.8 mile course.
Bonny Eagle's Kialeigh Marston & Deering's Yahya Hussein ran to victories at the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Road Race. Hussein crossed the line first in 11:19, while Marston ran 12:48 to take the girls race. The Westbrook girls won the team race, while Scarborough was tops on the boys side.
On a new, deceivingly slow 5k course at Westbrook, Casey Loring and Ryan Cadorette were winners.
The Maine Running Company XC Performance of the Week voting is complete for week #2. On the girls side Westbrook's Halee Phelps was selected as the winner for her win at Deering, while the boys winner was Josef Holt-Andrews of Telstar for his 16:26 state leading 5k performance.
The boys and girls of Deering, Noble, Westbrook, and Gorham dealt with the same wonderful conditions that the rest of the State did…rain and plenty of mud.
The Lake Region Invitational in Naples Maine, got the WMC and SMAA competition underway on Saturday morning. It was a hot and not so pleasant day for the runners, but the heat was no competition for race winners Hannah Austin of North Yarmouth Academy and Will Schafer of Gray-New Gloucester.
The story of the day was the record breaking performance of Cape Elizabeth senior Matt Rand, as he broke Miles Bartlett's course record by 5 seconds, running a 15:20.4 over the fast 3 mile course. Greely dominated the boys team race putting 3 guys in the top 5. While the Cape Elizabeth girls lived up to their #1 ranking in the coaches poll, scoring only 19 points to win against some strong competition.
