Hampden Academy is the top returning Class A team based on 5k results from all returners this fall. The Broncos placed third in the state meet a year ago behind champion Scarborough & runner-up Falmouth. Don't count out the Red Storm as they will be shooting for their third straight Class A title.

The SMAA Relays marks the official start of a new year in Class A West! After a few preseason invitational’s, the league met up for its annual 1.54 mile showdown today at Thornton Academy.  Scarborough’s Jacob Terry and Gorham’s Anna Slager were the top finishers on the day with Terry covering the course in 7:41 and Slager running an impressive 9:10.

Bonny Eagle's Kialeigh Marston & Deering's Yahya Hussein ran to victories at the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Road Race. Hussein crossed the line first in 11:19, while Marston ran 12:48 to take the girls race. The Westbrook girls won the team race, while Scarborough was tops on the boys side.

The Thornton Academy girls won the SMAA Southwestern title as expected on Saturday as the Trojans talied 135 points to outdistance runner-up Scarbororugh 102.5 & Cheverus 102 points. Several state leading mark, and meet records highlighted the USM Relays action. On the boys side Cheverus shattered the 4x200m relay record running 1:34.69. Scarborough added a record in the 4x800m relay as they clocked 8:24.69. On the day there was 12 state leading or equalling marks.

Bonny Eagle sophomore Kialeigh Marston won the girls individual title in her first xc season as she crossed the line in 19:34.16. On the boys side Mt Blue senior Josh Horne ran unchallenged throughout to secure the victory. With Marston's win the Bonny Eagle girls repeated as team champions 82-100 over Massabesic. On the boys side Lewiston dominated the team race as the Blue Devils won the 2nd title in school history with a 51-94 vcitory over Scarborough

Cadorette & Marston tops at SMAA Relays Derek Veilleux Sep 5, 2013

The SMAA xc season got underway with the annual relay meet at Thornton Academy on Thursday. The varsity boys had 7 individual races, while the girls varsity race consisted of 5 races. Ryan Cadorette of TA was the fastest boy winning section 1 in 8:29, it was his first ever xc meet. On the girls side Kialeigh Marston topped the rest of the field in race covering the 1.65 mile courrse in 9:41. Check out more.

The Scarborough boys won their first Class A outdoor title; four Class A state records fell and one was tied in the sprints and throws; and Teal Jackson of Brewer won four individual events -- a rare feat in Class A -- and set an overall state record.

The Bangor girls & Scarborough boys win Class A titles. Teal Jackson of Brewer broke the state record in the 400m, 57.0. Lindsay Folsom of Cony broke the pole vault state meet record 11-7. Jared Bell of Deering shattered the boys discus state meet record, 176-7 while Isaiah Harris of Lewiston broke the 800m state meet record 1:54.17.

The Bonny Eagle Scot girls rolled to the girl SMAA Southwestern title, as they scored an impressive 122 to easily outdistance runner-up Thornton Academy who scored 62. On the boys side Scarborough won it's first SMAA Outdoor since they have been in Class A, the Red Storm tallied 130 points to defeat runner-up Cheverus (81). Check out more action.

Scarborough's Robert Hall cruised to win in the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary 2.14 mile race this morning, Hall a senior clocked 10:50 to easily take the win. On the girls side Samantha Cox of Bonny Eagle pulled away from her teammate Kialeigh Marston to claim the girls title in 12:39. Scarbrough Boys & Bonny Eagle girl won the team titles. The first meet of the new year saw some fine performances this evening as the SMAA got the 2013 meet calendar underway. Jake Dixon of Cheverus shattered the Jr. 200m record with a blazing fast 23.85, to take over .54 off the old record. Other top performances came from Robby Hall in the mile (4:33.06), Meredith Willard in the Sr 55m (7.65), Alec James (13-0) in the pole vault, & Nyajock Pan 1:33.80 in the 600yd. Hall, who also runs indoor and outdoor track, dreams of one day running in the Olympics. The two time defending Class A champion Scarborough Red Storm are loaded once again as they aim for their 3rd title in a row. Winning has become tradition for the Red Storm since moving to Class A in 2003 they have won 6 state titles during that time frame. While they graduated 2 time defending Class A individual winner Nick Morris, plus 2 others from the top 7 (Wout Moulin & Mike Tudor), the Red Storm won't be rebuilding they have just reloaded.

There were 4 new state leading marks in the SMAA regular meet @ USM. Starting off the meet the Cheverus Girls clocked 10:14.76 in the 4x800, then Robert Hall (Scarborough) set a new Mile state leader 4:36.24, followed by Emily Tolman (Scarborough) in the 400m, 61.52. New England XC Championships: Boys Preview Patrick Bendzick Nov 9, 2011

New England has weathered a freak early season storm, but its disruptive nature has created lasting implications for the New England Championships.  Power outages and muddy conditions across the region wreaked havoc on the post season in many of the participating states. As a result, getting a true sense of the race depth is difficult because of the modifications made to many of the traditional qualifying courses, and the postponement of the Connecticut State Open Championships to November 8th.  But it’s the unknown that makes this sport so exciting.

McClintock & Leonardi fastest on the day in Western Maine Regional XC action Derek Veilleux Oct 22, 2011

The sodden fields greeted the Western Maine Regional XC runners this morning as they arrived at Twin Brook Recreation Park in Cumberland. The Class A girls started the action off, and Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) wasted no time going to front, she would never have to look back as she cruised to the fastest time on the day for any girl, 18:05.59. Cheverus Girls went 2-3-4 despite Emily Durgin not finishing to hold off Massabesic 45-51 for the regional title. The A boys were next, and we saw a repeat as Nick Morris (Scarborough) pulled away over the last 1.5 miles to win in 17:03.3,  while his Red Storm team had 4 in the top 15 to score a low of 61 to defeat runner-up South Portland 101. Class C girls was next, Meagan Thomas Lisbon moved her way through the field to claim the title 21:11.60, teamwise Merriconeag was dominate with 5 in the top 15. The boys race saw Matt McClintock hit the mile in 4:56,  he would run the fastest boys time on the day of 16:00.23, just missing the sub 16 mark. North Yarmouth cruised to the win in the team competition. Class B girls closed out the day with Abby Mace (Maranacook) bouncing back with a strong race, she would cross the line in 19:41.49. Greely pulled the upset for the team title behind 3 runners in the top 12. Silas Eastman (Fryeburg) closed out the race winners on the day taking his 2nd straight Class B title with a fine 16:18.11 performance. Falmouth showed why they are ranked #1 in the coaches poll as they had all 7 runners in the top 23.

Scarborough boys' cross country coach Jim Harmon hopes his runners leave the Western Regional meet Saturday with more than hardware. He's hoping they leave something in the tank for the Oct. 29 state meet, also scheduled for Twin Brook in Cumberlan "We'd just like to do well without having to dig deep and give it 100 percent," said Harmon, whose team has won five of the past seven Class A state titles. Imadhi Zagon (Portland) had a strong day clocking 10.94 in the 100m, then adding a 21-11 in the long jump at a SMAA meet @ Marshwood this afternoon. Zagon won both events but suffered a scare in the LJ as he pulled up lame with a hamstring injury. The injury didn't look to be serious but is something to keep an eye on moving forward. Kirk explodes in the 200m 25.81 new state best Derek Veilleux May 9, 2011

Scarborough's Nicole Kirk acheived a goal she's been aiming for since freshman year in 200m as the junior ripped the half lap on her home track this afternoon clocking a state leading 25.81. Kirk also added a fine 100m dash 12.58 which is the fastest  automatic time of the season. There was also some other fine performance including Leah Dodier (Marshwood) clearing 5-4 in the high jump.  Now that 2011 Indoor State Meets are complete and the rest of the postseason is winding down, it's time to look forward to next season. The objective was a simple one for the Scarborough girls track and field team entering the 4×200-meter relay Monday afternoon: Beat Bonny Eagle, and annex a seventh straight state championship. The quartet of Morgan Rodway, Emilia Scheemaker, Emily Tolman and Nicole Kirk rose to the occasion, getting the baton around the University of Southern Maine’s track in 1 minute, 50.42 seconds to keep their Class A dynasty going. 12 State leaders headlined by Scarborough Boys state record in Sprint Medley at USM Relays Derek Veilleux Dec 30, 2010

There were 7 new girls state leading marks and another 5 on the boys side at the USM Relays held today at USM in Gorham. On the boys side, the Scarborough Quartet of John Gonzalez, Joe Viola, Scott Merrill & Nick Morris (PICTURED LEFT), clocked 3:40.32 to take off 2.22 seconds off the previous record held by Deering, HS. Other highlights were some fast 55m for both genders, with Nicole Kirk (Scarborough) 7.66 & Adrian Reid (South Portland) 6.74 taking the titles. Bonny Eagle girls edge Windham by 1 point | Scarborough boys dominate again @ Smiling Hill Derek Veilleux Oct 14, 2010

 The #7 ranked Bonny Eagle girls edged the #8 ranked Windham Eagles at Smling Hill Farm in Scarborough this afternoon. The Scots had the fire power up front placing 2-3-4, with Samantha Cox leading the way with a 20:17. Winhdam took the next 4 spots 5-6-7-8 to close the gap with Erin Flately leading the way in 20:36, but BE's #4 runner Kristen Glennie raced to a 10th place finish to give the Scots the 19-26 through 4 runners. Windham would have runners 5-6-7 finish in the 15th-17th spots to give Windham a score of 41, BE's #5 runner held off a Scarborough runner by less than .3 seconds for 21st, the result a 40-41 win for the Scots. Individually Gorham's Mia Rapolla raced to a convincing 41 second victory, clocking 19:36 over the 5k course. On the boys side #1 Scarborough dominated once again, this time scoring 19 points to defeat #7 Gorham, who ran without #1 runner Logan Marshall. For the Red Storm, Nick Morris 16:56 lead a 1-2-3 finish, as Scarborough had 6 of the top 9 finishers on the day. RESULTS

Scarborough Boys/Girls Prevail in matchup of top teams in SMAA Derek Veilleux Sep 24, 2008

              In a battle between the top two teams in the SMAA, the Scarborough Red Storm took round 1 against the Cheverus Stags at a SMAA regular season meet held at Cheverus High School. The Stags were running without #1 runner Taylor Dundas, out with a IT band injury. Nate Hathaway & Craig Robinson from Scarborough ran 16:11 & 16:17 respectively on the 3 mile course, both under the old course record. On the girls side, #2 ranked Scarborough prevailed over Cheverus & Massabesic. Fiona Hendry of Cheverus took the top spot, running an impressive race, covering the course in a record 18:43.

Leonardi breaks course record, Hathaway takes the boys--Scarborough Boys/Girls win SMAA Relay titles Derek Veilleux Sep 4, 2008

Freshman Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) broke the SMAA Relay record with a 8:45 over th 1.6 mile course, she took 2 seconds from the previous record held by Erica Jesseman (Scarborough) who is now a top runner at UNH. Nate Hathaway (Scarborough) took control of the boys race at 800m and never relented as he took the race with a 7:56 clocking. Scarborough Boys showed great depth as they took the team title, while the Scarborough girls pulled it out in the 5th race as Erin McElwain proved the difference.  

Western Maine Class A Girls XC Preview Derek Veilleux Aug 19, 2008

The battle for the team title this fall is sure to be a fight with several of the top teams from last fall returning key members of their squads. Scarborough the defending champion returns their entire top 7 as does Thornton Academy. Bonny Eagle, Cheverus & McAuley all have strong teams returning as well. There are sure to be some great races this fall, with any number of teams capable of winning the championship. What team will establish itself as the favorite during the regular season?
